'Wherever You Go, There You Are', completed April 5th, 2018
'Wherever You Go...' is a powerful, dynamic original Mixed Media artwork created intuitively in my studio in the heart of the Peak District National Park in rural Derbyshire.
This painting was created using acrylic paints, aqua brush pens, Posca, Sharpie and gel pens, and Bic biro on A4 Strathmore Mixed Media paper.
My art falls loosely into the category of Raw, or 'Outsider' art - that is, art by self-taught or naïve art makers. Typically, those labelled as outsider artists have little or no contact with the mainstream art world or art institutions. Often, outsider art illustrates unconventional ideas, as is certainly the case with my own.
Jean Dubuffet posited that 'culture' - that is, mainstream culture - managed to assimilate every new development in art, and by doing so took away whatever power it might have had. The result was to asphyxiate genuine expression. 'Art Brut' (Raw Art) was his solution to this problem: art which was immune to the influences of culture, immune to being absorbed and assimilated because **the artists themselves were not willing or able to be assimilated.**
Dubuffet characterized Art Brut as, "Those works created from solitude and from pure and authentic creative impulses – where the worries of competition, acclaim and social promotion do not interfere," saying that these forms of art are, "because of these very facts, more precious than the productions of professionals. After a certain familiarity with these flourishings, lived so fully and so intensely by their authors, we cannot avoid the feeling that in relation to these works, cultural art in its entirety appears to be the game of a futile society, a fallacious parade." — Jean Dubuffet.
Although I am hesitant to apply ANY labels to my art, this description certainly resonates with me and my 'wild, unfettered' approach to my creativity. Everything that manifests when I put paint or pen to paper is an intuitive expression of powerful forces moving through me. The resulting artwork tends to resonate deeply with free thinkers and alternative minds, as well as with those who are seeking authenticity and spirit in their lives and in the artwork with which they choose to bring into it.
